Shoppers out and about over the weekend had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of St George’s Day.

Celebrated on Sunday 23 April Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Arts and Culture, Yasemin Brett promoted the message of diversity and tolerance.

Historically the symbol of gallantry and courage Cllr Brett was keen to let St George’s routes be known.

Cllr Brett said: “He was a migrant from a vibrant multi-cultural background persecuted for his religious beliefs.

“He has inspired myths and legends.

“For the people of Enfield – whose coat of arms coincidentally is a mythical dragon-type beast – we can take great pride in our own diversity, tolerance and ethics and we are fiercely proud of our nation.”

Enfield is well known for its multi-cultural community, and was something that Cllr Brett wanted locals to recall and acknowledge.

With Enfield Mayor Bernadette Lappage also in attendance, they spread the meaning of St George to the public in Church Street, Enfield Town, in the form of leaflets.

Mrs Lappage also collected money for her charity of choice Enfield Sounds Great.

Enfield Sounds Great is a year long musical festival committed to supporting numerous musical causes in the community.

England’s patron saint origin is someone of myth and legend.

It is thought that he was a Roman soldier of Greek birth in the Guard of Roman Emperor Diocletian.

He was put to death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith.
