A DISABLED man says rubbish dumped outside his house is attracting foxes and rats.

Peter Laws, of Clover Court, Scotland Green Road, says he constantly tells housing association Paradigm Housing about the flytipping constantly left outside.

The 43-year-old says the housing association put up wooden fences with key-coded gates up - but within hours they had been broken by people kicking and ramming them.

In December metal fences and gates were reinstalled, but the gates only lock one way and people continue to dump rubbish outside of his home.

Animals including foxes and rats have been attracted to the area outside the property because of the build-up of litter.

Mr Laws, who has cerebral palsy, cannot speak and cannot walk long distances, said: “I did tell my housing association but it seems like they just brush it aside.

“If they actually thought about resolving the situation instead of just putting a plaster over it things may get better.

“The only improvement that they have made is the gates, there hasn’t been anything else done and the gates haven’t stopped people.”

Mr Laws lives with athetoid cerebral palsy which affects his mobility, grip and speech and has lived at the property since 2001.

In 2002 he was robbed in his own home, when he opened the door believing it to be his carer, but was pushed over as a young man knocked him over and began searching his home.

Mr Laws’ got up and grabbed him, but due to his poor grip the attacker left the property with £20 and was never found.

After the incident Mr Laws bought a CCTV system to record the entrance to his hime and a mag-lock system for the front door.

He added: “It is the walkway outside my door that’s my problem, any willy-nilly walks through by my door, seeing that a vulnerable person lives here, so they try their luck.

“I used to sit outside, but now I would be afraid of being attack. A house over the road was broken into not too long ago but it never used to be like this.

“Just seeing the rubbish there 24/7 is horrible, and people urinate in the area too, it’s horrible. It feels like I am the only one who cares.”

Paradigm Housing said: “Paradigm Housing takes the illegal and anti-social act of fly-tipping very seriously. The money that we spend on its removal could be otherwise used for providing more affordable homes for those who need them most.

“This is the first time that this particular incident has been reported to us. We installed gates last year, at a significant cost, to try and prevent continued fly-tipping in this area, but these do not prevent people who are determined to dump rubbish illegally.

If our customers witness fly-tipping taking place, they should report it to the police or local authority, and ourselves, immediately.”
