MOTHERS who give birth at a Haringey hospital will be given a free baby box to help put an end to cot death.

Doctors at North Middlesex University Hospital will be giving out the Finnish-style boxes, which double as a crib, to all newborns.

They contain a firm mattress, a waterproof cover and 100 per cent cotton sheet, and are used as a child’s bed for the first six months of their life.

Michelle Lynch, bereavement midwife at North Middlesex University Hospital who is leading the Baby Box initiative, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Baby Box programme. By providing every new family with the chance to receive this box, we will ensure every child is offered the same safe start, regardless of their background.

“The online education platform Baby Box University provides an additional method of getting important health information and advice directly to the families we work with at a time and place that suits them.”

The project coincides with the start of Infant Mortality Awareness Month as there is strong evidence from Finland the baby box may help prevent deaths.
