Over 60 young people from sheltered accommodation worked together with staff and volunteers to put on a red carpet award ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

On July 13, young people from Christian Action Housing performed a plays for the packed Dugdale Centre, “Jason’s story”, written by themselves and drawn from their own lives. Other performances including singing and rap.

The night ended with a party, where they were finally able to let their hair down.

One of the organisers, 19-year-old Sonya, said: “We have worked so hard on this event, and we are so proud of what we have achieved”

Shadene, 18, added: “I was really nervous to perform but everyone came up to me afterwards and said well done, it was such a buzz and now I feel really proud”.

Christian Action Housing provides supported accommodation for young people aged 16 to 24, who have been made homeless for reasons such as family breakdown, or violent or abusive home lives.

Jacqui Bainbridge, Head of Supported and Retirement Housing at Enfield Council, said: “We are very proud of our young people as they have a huge struggle to live independently, they have to overcome a lot of their own personal issues at the same time as learning to live independently.

“They have very little or no family support and that can be tough on them at such a young age, this story is one of overcoming struggles to succeed”.
