Over 200 tonnes of scrap metal were caught up in a blaze which took ten fire engines to put out.

The fire, which began in a scrap yard in Theobalds Park Road on Sunday afternoon (July 17), was fought by 72 firefighters, who were brought in from as far afield as Southgate, Tottenham, Hornsey and Barnet, as well as Enfield and Edmonton.

The London Fire Brigade said a diesel tank “was also involved in the blaze”, but the fire had been brought under control.

Station Manager Frazer Ferguson said: "It's one of the warmest days of the year so far and our crews worked incredibly hard in hot and arduous conditions to get this fire under control. We will be at the scene for some time now damping down."

Three skip lorries, a digger and a portable cabin were destroyed by the flames, which started at 4.38pm and was under control by 7.10pm.

It is not known if there were any injuries, and the Fire Brigade said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
