Plans are being proposed to turn an empty church into a retirement home.

Developers want to turn the former Oakwood Methodist Church in Westpole Avenue into accommodation designed for people over 60.

The site, which currently includes a church, hall, nursery school and a residential flat, is around 300 metres from Oakwood underground station and Trent Park, but has been vacant since September 2014.

Ali Maruf, regional managing director for McCarthy and Stone, the would-be developers, says the current site is an “eyesore” which needs improvement.

He said: “Our proposals will deliver a high-quality, attractive development that can improve the existing site, whilst diversifying local housing choice in the area.”

McCarthy and Stone have promised to hold community consultation and will hold meetings with neighbours and stakeholders, before a public exhibition at a later date.
