A group have written to Sadiq Khan asking for his continued Cycle Enfield support despite a legal challenge being launched against it.

Better Streets for Enfield have written to the new London mayor, calling on him to continue backing the £30m scheme to introduce major cycle routes through busy commercial areas of Enfield.

Last month an opposition group launched a judicial review against Enfield Council, saying the plans will harm business and are unpopular with the public.

However Better Streets member Clare Rogers said in the letter said they “are excited by the opportunity for transformation.”

The letter says: “As residents of Enfield we welcome your electoral pledge to create a Mini Holland in every borough.

“We are local residents - some of us cycle, many of us don’t - who share the belief that streets dominated by motor cars are not good for anyone.

“Enfield’s high car dependency has contributed to air pollution, unpleasant high streets and childhood obesity. Yet we aspire to a future for our borough where every child can safely walk or cycle to school.

“We ask you to support our council in seeing the scheme carried out in full. We believe that the attitude of the naysayers is neither representative of the majority of Enfield’s residents, nor in their best interests.

“While the council must shape the scheme in response to the public consultation, watering it down or scrapping it altogether would be wasting a colossal opportunity to benefit everyone in the borough.

“Please could you confirm that you will continue to work with our council to progress the Cycle Enfield programme, so that we and our children can enjoy better, healthier, happier streets?”

Enfield Council recently unveiled changes to the A105 section of Cycle Enfield after public feedback.

As a result, 22 bus stops on the route will have “buffer strips” installed to protect people getting off public transport, although six will go unchanged.

Blue badge holders will be allowed to pick up and drop off anywhere on the route while the 125 bus will terminate on a different part of Station Road.

Lodge Drive car park in Palmers Green will also have a redesign to cater for spaces being lost along the high street and a zone giving free parking for 45 minutes will be created.

However, Save Our Green Lanes has applied for a judicial review of Enfield Council’s decision to go ahead with the A105 scheme.

Member Costas Georgiou said: “We support cycling and walking but the council did not tell people the whole story about the impacts of the cycling scheme when it consulted and has still not addressed valid concerns. The cycle lanes are bad news for our local community.”
