Enfield business owners have celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a special party.

The More Business networking group began their regular weekly meeting at Millfield Arts Centre, Edmonton, with patriotic cupcakes and snacks, along with a room decorating with bunting used in royal celebrations since the silver jubilee in 1977.

Group organiser Mel Tadhunter, who came up with the idea, said while she is not overly royalist, she did think it was important to honour Britain’s first nonagenarian monarch.

She said: “We always celebrate major themes and days, and a celebration like this is part of being British, we wanted to capitalise on this day.

“At each meeting our members, business owners from around Enfield, make pitches, and today those have to include either ‘Queen’, ‘Ninetieth’ or ‘Birthday’.

“We used this bunting for the silver jubilee and for Charles and Diana’s wedding, and we’re using it again today – anything to celebrate our heritage.”

Other members of the group got into the spirit of celebration by wearing royal themed clothes and costumes.

Liz Sorton, a life coach for teenagers, wore a crown she had made alongside her five-year-old daughter.

She said: “I just think it is a big deal she has reached 90, so it is good to celebrate with friends.

“The idea of living your life so much in the public eye, and raising a family, that is what I respect the most.”

Insurance broker Simon Arnold, a member of More Business for two years, said the group regularly themes meetings to celebrate events like Christmas and Easter, but was especially proud to celebrate the Queen.

He said: “I am very pro-monarchy, I’m ex-forces too. I love the Royal Family and all that they stand for.

“I associate the Queen with happy and sad memories, from attending gun salutes in Hyde Park to Diana’s funeral in 1997, but today I wish her a very happy birthday.”

Enfield Council have also wished the Queen a happy birthday.

Council leader Cllr Doug Taylor, said: “On behalf of the whole of Enfield I wish the Queen a very happy 90th birthday, when the borough will be proudly playing a role in the nationwide celebration.

“Her Majesty has carried out an enormous amount of work over the years and on behalf of Great Britain and the Commonwealth and we are grateful for the contribution she has made during a lifetime of service.”
