A man convicted of selling dodgy driveways has been ordered to pay back over £23,000 or face jail.

James Hanrahan, 46 of Wharf Road, Ponders End, was convicted at a ‘Proceeds of Crime Hearing’ on February 1 at Wood Green Crown Court.

Police received reports in January 2015 of a man harassing residents in Uvedale Road in Enfield. Hanrahan’s company, Marshalls Home Improvements, had been working on some driveways in the street.

The driveways installed were later found to have major defects including inadequate drainage and poor quality workmanship which meant they would crack and shift position.

Hanrahan was sentenced to complete a 12-month community order, fined £50 and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work at Wood Green Crown Court on 6 July 2015.

He has now been ordered by a judge to pay £23,200 of compensation within 12 weeks or face prison.

Hanrahan was ordered to not only pay compensation to some victims, but also hand over to Enfield Council some of the money he made from his criminal activity.

Enfield Council’s cabinet member for environment Cllr Daniel Anderson said: “Enfield Council will do everything in its power to seize money and assets, which have been made by criminal activity. We will also strive to help people who have been affected by dodgy companies, such as Hanrahan’s, to recoup their lost money.

“By pursuing this court case we have done just that by forcing Hanrahan to both compensate the victims of his dreadful driveways, as well as ensure that he does not benefit personally from his criminal activity.”
