Enfield Council will decide whether to buy an old school site for children with autism.

Minchenden School, in High Street, Southgate, could provide extra school places and either save £1.7 million.

The authority says it could help cut transport costs for children with learning disabilities who currently have to rely on taxis to take them to schools outside the borough.

The site is currently owned by Barnet and Southgate College. It has six buildings, including Southgate Mansion House, which is Grade II* listed and dates from 1780.

If bought, the site will be divided into two, with Mansion House in one half, and the rest of the buildings being used for the school.

The site could cater for 120 pupils.
