In November, hundreds of people were evacuated from Enfield Town after a bomb scare in a coffee shop.

The “suspicious package”, thought to be a suitcase, was found inside Caffe Nero, in Church Street, at 8.30am on November 20, near Enfield Market.

Police evacuated people from the area and the suitcase was destroyed by a bomb squad in a controlled explosion after 10am.

Detectives said it was a false alarm and there was no bomb inside the suitcase.

People were allowed back inside at 10.30am as cordons were removed, while Caffe Nero reopened at around 11am.

A couple that only went on two dates before tying the knot have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Jim, 80, and Maureen McMillan, 76, of Winchmore Hill, were sent a telegram from the Queen to commemorate their 60 years together.

“She was my friend’s sister and I had just come out the army”, recalled Mr McMillan.

“We went on two dates to the pub and then on the following Monday I told her not to go back to work the next day because we were getting married.”

Finally, angry residents have launched a petition after fireworks were thrown at police officers, leaving one injured.

The Halloween weekend was tainted in the borough after families were left terrified by “groups of youths” hurling fireworks.

The incidents took place across the borough and a community officer was left burnt after a firework was fired at them by Albany Leisure Centre, in Hertford Road.

Resident Gina Needs, told the Enfield Independent the community intend to launch a petition banning fireworks unless the person has a public display license.

She said: “It was not just around here but other people in Enfield that are fed up with the problems it brings. This senseless act is ruining Halloween for everyone else.”
