The five major political parties have selected their candidates for the forthcoming Greater London Assembly elections.

The elections will be held in May 2016, alongside the London mayoral election. The winning candidate will represent Enfield and Haringey in the official London legislature.

Among the candidates are the current representative, a 33-year-old maths teacher, and two former Labour members now opposing their former party.

Here they are profiled by party:

Labour - Joanne McCartney

Haringey’s current representative in the London assembly has confirmed she is standing again to defend her seat.

Ms McCartney was elected as the London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey in June 2004. She currently Chairs the London Assembly’s Police & Committee and sits on the Budget & Performance Committee.

She previously served as an Enfield councillor from 1998 to 2006.

Len Duvall, chair of the London Labour regional board, said: “It’s the strongest team we’ve ever had to represent Londoners across our city, and work with Sadiq Khan leading the campaign in London up to May.”

Greens – Ronald Stewart

Enfield and Haringey Green Parties have selected Ronald Stewart as their constituency candidate for the London Assembly elections in May 2016.

The 33-year-old has worked as a maths tutor across the two boroughs for the last ten years. He joined the Green Party as part of the so-called “green surge” in the last year.

Mr Stewart said, “The Greens will focus on making London a great city to live and work in.

“People need secure housing they can afford to rent or buy, public transport with fair fares, and clean air to breathe.”

Conservatives – Linda Kelly

Former Labour councillor Ms Kelly will be standing in the blue corner for this election.

Ms Kelly served as a councillor for Hackney between 2000 and 2014, including a period as civic mayorm before voluntarily switching to the Tories. She lives with her husband, Eli, in Stamford Hill, works as a housing support manager, and has one son.

Ms Kelly was born in India, emigrating to the United Kingdom when she was five years old.

"I want to get the message across that we are a competent, moderate and progressive party who can run the capital well in Londoners' interests,"she said.

UKIP – Neville Watson

A former Labour party member, Mr Watson will be standing for UKIP in this election. He is an active member of his local church in Palmers Green.

His face may be familiar to regular readers, after he successfully overturned a driving fine in a case where Haringey Council tried to use pictures from 2008 as evidence. He also stood as the UKIP candidate in Edmonton for the 2015 General Election, coming third out of six.

Mr Watson lives on Roslyn Road, South Tottenham, with his wife Bobette.

He said: "I will have a shield of steel, and exercise it in defence of those without the power to have their own shield."

Liberal Democrats – Nicolas DaCosta

The Lib Dems have been contacted for more information about their candidate.
