An all new Enfield Town market has been branded a “huge success” after it was relaunched.

The Town market, which has stood in the area since 1303, made a loss in 2014 for the first time in its history.

However the Old Enfield Charitable Trust, who run the market, have overseen the major revamp of and plan to have the market take place three days a week.

The historic site was awash with new businesses under white gazebos along with long standing stallholders.

Sue Attwood, chairwoman of the trust, said: “It’s just unbelievable and very exciting. You sometimes don’t know what you’ve got until you regenerate it.

“Everyone has worked so hard to make it a success with a combination or old and new traders, we hope it will appeal to everyone in Enfield.”

A host of fresh products were on display from Thursday October 1 to Sunday, October 3 as the market came back with a bang.

There had been a lack of seating in the previous market. However, a new food court has been created in the centre for passers-by in a bid to boost trade.

“The relaunch of Enfield Town Market was a huge success.” said Mark Rudling, the town centre manager for Enfield Business and Retailers Association.

“The market plays a very important role within the borough and makes Enfield Town a proper tradition market town, giving it a unique identity in North London.

“Over the last few years most town markets have suffered, partly because of the changes in customers buying habits, but also because of the increasing competition from 99p and discount stops who are able to buy in vast volumes.”

The trust also has plans to extend opening house and put on extra community events to restore the market as a centrepiece of the town.

Mr Ruddling praised the way in which the charitable trust had managed to keep existing traders as well as bringing in new business.

He said: “I am particularly pleased that the market has managed to retain many of their original stall holders who compliment many new continental food stalls making a great place to buy lunch. There is even an attractive covered seating area for eating at if you can’t wait to get home.

“The Old Enfield Charitable Trust should be congratulated for embracing change and making a large investment in the future of the market which should help it to flourish for many years to come.”
