A brave teacher and her son went in front of pupils to have their heads shaved in the name of charity.

Liz Jones, learning mentor at Chesterfield Primary School, in Enfield Lock, and her son Alan Sims are feeling rather bald today following the headshave in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The pair have so far raise more than £1,300 for the cancer charity with Ms Jones’ hair being donated to the Little Princess trust to make wigs.

The teacher of 13 years said: “I wanted to shave my hair three years ago but was not sure how the school would take it – when I saw Brave the Shave I asked the school and they could not have been more accommodating.”

Ms Jones revealed that cancer is “close to her heart” after losing her ex-husband Harry Sims to cancer last year.

“We have lost many family members and we thought this was the right time to raise money for cancer support at Macmillan.”

Initially planning on shaving her head in her garden, the 54-year-old was delighted but nervous ahead of changing her plans to get her locks cut off in front of the school.

She said: “I am not one to seek attention but that is going to be hard to avoid now after this.

“I was a nervous wreck before it happened and once I told everyone why we were doing this, there was not a dry eye in the house.

“The children were very understanding, which was the best part.”

Two ex-pupils cut the pair's hair, making the day “even sweeter” according to Ms Jones.

Speaking about her next fundraiser, Ms Jones is hoping to do the three-peaks challenge and raise money for the heart foundation after losing her brother to heart failure.
