Three people have been selected to battle it out for the Conservative nomination to be the London Assembly member for Enfield and Haringey.

A seven-time karate world champion, a personal injury solicitor and former Enfield councillor are in the running to take on Labour’s Joanne McCartney in the election on May 5, next year.

Molly Samuel-Leport MBE was named 1989 Sunday Times International Sports Woman of the Year for her karate career and campaigned heavily in Enfield during the general election.

Matt Smith was educated at a comprehensive school before graduating from Oxford University. He is a practising solicitor for a top law firm and was a former parliamentary candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow.

Finally, Denise Headley is a former Labour Party councillor who defected to the Conservatives in 2009. She represented Bush Hill Park ward for the Tories up until 2014 and served as their spokesperson on adult social care.

A Conservative spokesman said: "Local members are looking for a unifying candidate, someone we can rally round as we look to rebuild in the borough.

“We've got five associations that need to work together, someone that's good at building bridges, uniting people and can run an inclusive election campaign that people want to be a part of."

The trio will go before party members on Sunday before a vote is held to choose the Conservative candidate.
