Teenagers made the borough proud defending their Aquathlon title in swimming events at the London Youth Games.

After eight months of competition between hundreds of thousands of youngsters in the capital, the borough came 14th overall in the Jubilee Trophy standings thanks to medals in the Female ParaGames Swimming, the Mini-Swimming and a triumph in the Aquathlon.

The Aquathlon is a combination of running, swimming and then running again and team manager Matt Molloy said: “We won last year so there was a bit more pressure this year. We thought we were reasonably strong but not as strong as then, and we knew it would be close.

“Most of our team comes from Enfield swim squad; one or two specialise in triathlons as they get older. For some of them it is only the first or second time they’ve experienced the multi-sport environment and it’s a good introduction for them.”

Mr Molloy also praised his two individual gold medallists Sam Pereira and Jake Callis, adding: “Our two individual gold medallists were great. Joe (Jake), who is a triathlete was a standout in terms of quality. Sam Pereira, a Year 9 lad absolutely buried himself to push through that pain barrier.

“We explained the importance that you might not be winning, or coming in the first few places, but in terms of the overall team competition, you might be nicking points off other people and it might make all the difference.”
