Students will be putting their persuasive powers to the test as they battle to be crowed champions of a debating challenge.

Seven girls from Enfield County, St Anne’s, Winchmore and Southgate schools will debate controversial topics such as using nuclear power, allowing performance enhancing drugs in sport and making the vote compulsory.

Debates will take place throughout the day as the 23 competing teams are gradually reduced for the grand final of the London Debate Challenge.

Teacher, Rebecca Nyamah at Winchmore School, said: “The girls are brimming with confidence and are thrilled to be representing the borough. This is a great experience for them and it has been great fun helping them build in confidence.

“Fiona Whytehead of Locus Coaching for Enfield Council’s school enrichment programme has provided additional support and they have responded extremely well to her excellent training.”

The main team of five debaters includes: Sharon Mehari from Enfield County, 14, Zahra Alawoad, 14, from St Anne’s, Isla Lockhart, 14, from Southgate School, Amaani Ghazi 13 from Winchmore School; and Ianthe Wainer 14 from Enfield County with reserves from Enfield County Eden Prince 14 and Megan Meagre13.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield council’s cabinet member for education, children’s services and protection, said: “This is good experience for young people requiring good communication, intellectual challenge and research skills.

“Through the council’s school enrichment programme we are able to offer extensive opportunities to our children of all ages and bring out their talents. Good luck to our Enfield team.”
