Commuters have called for leaking waste water that is causing a stench at a train station to be cleaned up.

Travellers taking the train from Palmers Green station, in Aldermans Hill, Palmers Green are forced to breathe fumes from what they believe to be sewage.

Hundreds of people use the Govia-run line, which runs between Hertford North and Moorgate and passes through several stations in the borough.

Rail user Imran Dadabhoy claims sewage is seeping through the walls of the station onto the steps leading to the platform.

Mr Dadabhoy claims passengers have been complaining for some time and nothing has been done, and the area has not been cordoned off.

James Violaris, who commutes out of London from Palmers Green, called the problem a “major health and safety issue”.

He added: “It is disgusting. This has been happening for at least two months and the smell is horrendous, how it has been left in such a mess I do not know.

“I have complained about this before but the problem is, no one knows who is actually responsible. It feels like everyone is passing the buck on this and leaving the commuters with a nasty surprise as they walk to the platform.”

A spokeswoman for Govia said: “The sewage is actually water waste and we are working with our maintenance staff and Network Rail to solve the problem.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused to commuters using our line.”
