Children have used a £264,000 sports facility for the first time.

Houndsfield School hosted a football batch at the multi-use games area (MUGA) next to its playing field in Rippon Road, Edmonton, to celebrate its completion.

Enfield Borough Council paid £234,000 towards the games area and the school contributed £30,000 with the aim of encouraging young people to take up sport.

The site also includes a building containing six classrooms, a large hall and function rooms.

Headteacher Kate Holland said, “This area is the final part of our school expansion and it is a great facility for local children, not just during school time but for after school clubs too.

“It is a vital asset for our children where they can exercise, develop a keen interest in sport, get plenty of fresh air and learn something about teamwork.

“We are keen to develop a strong sports programme that will give all our children confidence and enjoyment as well as the health benefits from physical activity.”

Councillor Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for education, children’s services and protection, said: “The MUGA is the perfect addition to the school expansion.

“It will give the children improved health; opportunities to take part in exciting sports; and to learn how to improve physical skills. I am delighted that it will be enjoyed by so many young people.”
