Concerned mothers are planning a protest to safeguard their children as they walk to school.

Parents of children at Eversley Primary School, in Eversley Park Road, in Winchmore Hill, believe the lack of traffic signals has left the road "an accident waiting to happen".

Clare Baker, of Church Hill, walks her children to school and told the Enfield Independent of the dangers the road poses.

She said: “I don’t stand there with a speed camera but cars and particularly buses hurtle down the road and are very close to the side where our children walk.

“There is nothing stopping them from going fast down that road and it feels like there is an accident waiting to happen.”

The campaigners, who have received backing from former deputy mayor of Enfield and primary school governor Ingrid Cranfield, will meet on the corner of the road, next to the new Winchmore pub.

Ms Baker said that she wants to see the road widened or a zebra crossing put in to improve safety on the children’s walk to school.

She said: “It feels like someone is waiting for an accident to happen before changing the road but we see it every day the dangers our children face.

“We are encouraged to walk our children to school or get them to cycle, which is great, but they are being put at risk by buses and cars going all sorts of speeds down the road.”

Parents would also like the extension of the 20mph zone around the school to Holly Walk.

Councillor Daniel Anderson, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “The safety of our children is of paramount importance. Parents walking to school with their children need to feel that it is safe to cross. So may I remind motorists to drive with due caution.

"We have established 20mph speed limits to encourage walking to school, and nobody should be speeding anywhere along our residential roads – especially near schools.

“For this reason we have introduced 20mph zones and other safety measures around most schools in the borough.

“This includes roads adjacent to Eversley Park Primary School which also has a raised zebra crossing by the school entrance on Chaseville Park Road.

"While there have been no pedestrian casualties recorded on Eversley Park Road in recent years, we are not complacent and we are in discussions with the school about additional road safety and traffic management measures and speaking to the police about speed enforcement along the road.”
