A man has avoided a prison sentence after he was convicted of assaulting a woman.

Gokhan Ozyol, 34, of Slades Hill, in Enfield, was given a community order after a woman in her 30s was found with blood coming from her mouth and nose as he was bent over a car.

A police officer who was fluent in Turkish overheard the pair talking on Cornwallis Road, Edmonton on Sunday, January 11, with Ozyal saying “don’t tell them what happened” and “tell them you fell over because you are drunk”.

The victim chose not to provide a statement yet the police were able to charge Ozyol with assault by beating and remand him in custody.

He was found guilty at Tottenham Magistrates Court on April 22, and ordered to take part in a domestic abuse programme for 25 days and carry out 50 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

Ozyol was also ordered to pay £620 and a victim surcharge of £60.

Trainee Detective Constable, Ian Cleghorn, from Enfield’s community safety unit, said: “Our victim suffered at the hands of this man and this outcome is testimony to our commitment to relentlessly pursue violent offenders responsible for abuse.

“We have a dedicated and experienced team of officers who offer the highest level of support, respect and confidence to victims of domestic abuse.”
