Figures show there have been more than 3,000 cases of arson in North London in the past five years.

Following a Freedom of Information request from the Times Series, London Fire Brigade revealed that of the 13,530 fires across North London, almost a third were in Enfield – where there were 4,298 fires from March 2010 to 2015.

Barnet had the second highest number of reported fires in North London with 3,848, with 3,402 in Haringey and 1,982 in Harrow.

The data, which is available on the London Datastore, also reveals the numbers of certain types of calls the fire brigade receives.

This shows a total of 1,173 fires were started deliberately in Enfield, while crews received malicious false alarm calls on 370 occasions.

In Barnet, firefighters tackled 827 deliberate fires and received 188 malicious false alarm calls, while fire brigades in Harrow dealt with 346 cases of arson and 126 malicious calls.

In Haringey there were 704 reported arson cases and 338 malicious false alarm calls.

Over the last five years, a smoke alarm was working and active at just 41 per cent of fires in homes in the capital.

Where there was a death caused by a house fire, there was only a working smoke alarm at 38 per cent of homes.
