A project to teach children where their food comes from has celebrated 1,313 pupils taking part in its first year.

Supermarket chain Tesco's 'eat happy' project, launched in March last year, has taught more than 1,000 children, with visits to its in-store bakery and a trip to the cheese and fish counters at the Southbury Road Superstore, Lea Valley and Ponders End Extra outlets.

Eni Martins, London community manager for Tesco, said: “We’re thrilled that so many children in Enfield  have now had the chance to take part in a farm to fork trail. We have made real progress towards our goal of improving the relationship children have with their food and hopefully helping them go on to lead healthier lives.

“The response we’ve had from teachers, parents and the children themselves have been incredible and we’re looking forward to welcoming more children over the coming year.”

Tesco launched the programme after discovering less than ten per cent of children eat five fruit or vegetables a day.
