An online petition has been launched after fears grow that a traditional pub could have seen its last orders.

The Green Dragon pub, in Green Lanes, Winchmore Hill, closed its doors last month due to financial troubles.

People living in the area now fear it could be knocked down and replaced with flats.

The online petition has now generated 3,321 signatures, with many calling for the pub to be restored to its former glory.

Mike McClean, who set up the online petition, told the Enfield Independent of his fond memories of the watering hole.

He said: “It is a pub I have grown up with, I have had many a celebration in there and it was a fantastic pub.

“Unfortunately it lost its way in recent months but I would be absolutely devastated to see it torn down for flats. Of course, we do not know what it might be but as you can see from the petition, there is so much support for the pub to be restored.”

There has been a Green Dragon pub on or near the site since 1726 and it is a landmark in Green Lanes.

Mr McClean added: “The pub has survived wars and countless other times of great difficulty and poverty over nearly 300 years, yet we are in danger of allowing it to be destroyed now just because of a few years of poor turnover.

“This area would lose its character if the pub was to be knocked down and a big part of a lot of people’s histories would be destroyed.”

There has been no decision made on the future of the pub, but Mr McClean hopes his petition will receive 4,000 signatures, enough to trigger a council debate on the future of the pub.

Jonny Royall, of Elm Park Road, who used to work in the pub, said: “It would be a crying shame to see a pub with so much history knocked down. The food in there has always been good and the garden was excellent in the summer.”
