A special memorial candle was lit to mark the 70th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Enfield Borough Council was one of 70 organisations to receive one of the candles, designed by artist Sir Anish Kapoor, for its commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day at the Dugdale Centre yesterday.

Holocaust Memorial Day is held on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, and this year is the 70th anniversary of the end of the genocide.

Enfield Council leader Councillor Doug Taylor, said: “It is a great honour to receive a special candle. Holocaust Memorial Day is an important focal point in the year and we are delighted to have been selected to be part of this nationwide commemoration.

“This year ‘Keep the Memory Alive’ is a significant theme and it is vital that we remember what it means and learn from it.”

Speaking before the commemoration, Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: “Our designer has created a beautiful candle to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

“When all 70 candles are lit throughout the country, it will be a poignant moment of remembrance and a time for us all to ensure we keep the memory alive.”

The event included speeches, live performances from Face Front Theatre, Hazelbury Junior School, Highlands Secondary School and a week-long art exhibition by A-level students from Winchmore Secondary School were also produced at the event yesterday evening.
