An opera group is celebrating its 50th anniversary with two shows.

The Southgate Opera, which originally started out at Southgate College in 1965 and is now based at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, in Windmill Hill, Enfield, will perform Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado in February and Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow in June.

Current chairman Lee Mason joined the group as a child and has sung many leading roles down the years.

She said: “Joining a group such as Southgate provides opportunities for young singers to learn and practise their skills, but we always welcome new members whatever their age or experience. And you don’t have to sing to be a member, we always need help backstage and with costumes.”

The Mikado is on from Wednesday February 18, to Saturday, February 21, and The Merry Widow is on from Wednesday June 24, to Saturday June 27 at the Wyllyotts theatre, in Potters Bar.
