Primary school pupils visited a hospice to learn about patients’ life stories.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at Highfield Primary School, created memory boxes, poems and learnt about the lives of patients at North London Hospice’s Enfield site, in Barrowell Green.

The programme culminated with a celebratory tea at which children and parents, patients and staff joined together to display their achievements and discuss their experiences.

Karen Clements, North London Hospice’s art therapist, who led the school project, said: “We are pleased to have partnered with Highfield Primary School on this exciting project, which enabled their pupils to gain an understanding of the services provided by a hospice and helped dispel any anxiety or fears they may have about death and dying.

“This has been an extremely rewarding experience for all participants and our patients found working with the children energising. The art work created will be displayed in the hospice’s open space before going to on display at the whole school assembly. We very much look forward to continuing this prosperous partnership with Highfield.”

Helen McGovern, deputy head teacher at Highfield School, said: “Highfield Primary is delighted to be involved in this community partnership project; one in which our pupils have learnt about different people's lives and experiences whilst at the same time finding out about the important services being provided by the North London Hospice.”

Terence Foskett, one of the hospice’s patients said: “This experience has been a real eye opener. The children have been wonderful and are a real credit to their parents and teachers. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this project and looking back on great memories in my life.”
