A 74-year-old man has been charged with more than 20 counts of historical crimes included rape and false imprisonment.

Aravindan Balakrishnan, of Latymer Road, Enfield, is accused of imprisoning three women for more than 30 years in a house in Brixton.

He was charged last Wednesday at Westminster Magistrates Court with 25 different offences between 1980 and 2013.

Balakrishnan was charged with 19 counts of indecent assault between 1980 and 1992 and four counts of rape between 1980 and 1983.

He has been further charged with cruelty to a person under the age of 16 between January 6, 1983 and January 7, 1999 for "wilfully ill-treating, assaulting, and neglecting the said child, in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering".

He is also accused of false imprisonment of a woman between January 6, 1999, and October 26, 2013.

Balakrishnan was arrested in Lambeth, south London, in November last year.

He has been released on conditional bail to appear at Southwark Crown Court on December 31.
