A singing group is going from strength to strength after receiving a £4,000 cash boost.

Clay Hill singers, based at St Luke’s Church, in Browning Road, Enfield, was started by churchgoers Valerie Budd and Elaine Plumb to improve people’s wellbeing.

Miss Budd said: “I admit we were influenced by Gareth Malone’s television programmes about choirs, and realised that the health and social benefits of singing would meet the Mothers’ Union aim of serving and supporting the local community. Singing together relieves stress and also helps people to get to know their neighbours.

“We were very fortunate to obtain the services of Claire Stogden of Four Hills Music, who is an inspirational choir leader."

The group has received the money from the Enfield Residents Priority Fund and is hoping to recruit more members.

Councillor Yasemin Brett, Enfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for community organisations, said: “I was so glad that Enfield Council could support this wonderful group, which gets all members of the community singing and meeting their neighbours.

“People tell us they really enjoy the sessions, and say they have not enjoyed themselves so much in ages and how it leaves them feeling good about themselves. I do hope more people join up."

The group meets on Friday mornings in term time, from 10.30am till 12.00 noon, and each session starts with some warm-up exercises, and the group sings familiar tunes, such as I Could Have Danced All Night, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Councillor Nick Dines, councillor for Chase Ward said: “‘Community groups are integral to our society in Enfield, and I am delighted that we have been able to support the Clay Hill Singers."

Cllr Vicki Pite, who also represents Chase Ward added: “I’m very happy that ERPF funding has helped support and encourage such a successful and worthwhile community project.

“The songs are popular ones that most people know, so everyone can join in, and no previous experience of singing or music is necessary, just turn up and enjoy the atmosphere and lovely music.”
