Enfield has been reaccredited as a Fairtrade borough.

The borough first attained the status in 2008 but did not reapply in 2012.

However, the Fairtrade Foundation gave Enfield Borough Council a period of grace to lodge a new application.

The Fairtrade Foundation noted that Enfield is continuing to develop stronger links with schools and acknowledged the promotion work it is doing in libraries and public places.

Councillor Andrew Stafford, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for finance, said: “Enfield Council has for a number of years strongly supported the principles behind the Fairtrade ethos.

“Farmers in some of the world’s poorest countries get a good price for their crops and labour, and we get high quality products, it’s a win win situation.

“It’s fantastic news to hear we have been reaccredited as a Fairtrade borough and we look forward to working with our partners to encourage even more businesses to sign up.”

The authority has also set up a Fairtrade Flagship employer to promote Fairtrade and has agreed that Christian Action Housing will take on that mantle.
