An operation to curb vehicle crime has resulted in 95 arrests.

Operation Spyder, which was launched in January 2014, has been run by police and Enfield Borough Council to crack down on vehicle crime.

As of August, there have been 95 arrests and a reduction in vehicle crimes this year by 612, compared with last year.

Detective Inspector Greg Coates, from Enfield’s neighbourhood and partnership unit, said: “Since hearing the statement from the known car thief, officers on my team have proactively targeted the individual and he has now been arrested and is in custody awaiting sentence and likely to receive an anti-social behaviour order to restrict his future activities.

“We will continue to use a variety of tactics to pursue those engaged in motor vehicle crime."

"During a recent conversation with a police officer, a known local criminal made the following callous statement ‘If people are stupid enough to leave their cars unlocked, I may end up having a little look inside’

“This sums up the attitude of criminals.”

Enfield Council’s cabinet member for environment and community safety, Councillor Chris Bond, said: “We are absolutely committed to working with our partners in the Metropolitan Police to tackle vehicle crime and I’m delighted with how successful we have been in cutting this type of crime in Enfield.”
