A mother who lost her son in a car crash almost two years ago is on a mission to improve safety on the road.

Sarah Boyton, of Elsinge Lane, lost her 17-year-old son, Jack, in a car crash in December 2012 on the A10.

Jack was killed alongside friends Ashley Jones and Harry Ferrand, both of the Elsinge Estate, and passenger Liam Bradshaw, suffered serious injuries.

The mother, who also launched a cafe in memory of her son called Jack’s Cafe, has launched the petition to improve safety on the road that claimed her son.

She said: “Before and after Jack’s accident there has been a number of crashes on the A10 and it seems to get more frequent.

“The lay-bys are not well signed and people could easily miss them or go off too quickly, there needs to be an improvement in safety.”

So far, Ms Boyton has managed to collect almost 1,000 within two weeks of it being launched.

The road has come under recent criticism from people living alongside it who are furious at the constant drag racing which takes place every weekend.

Ms Boyton added: “It has been very emotional and overwhelming to see all the comments made and we have had excellent support.

“A facebook page we set up for it has around 3,000 members and I am only 90 odd short of getting to the 1,000 barrier.”

Her ideas include introducing traffic lights and reducing the speed limit on the road and hopes that the petition can make a real difference.

She said: "It's not a motorway but people do drive really fast down that road. I never realised that it was actually a 70mph speed limit.

“It cannot hinder our chances of improving the safety of the road and I hope we can make a difference.”
