Around 30 police officers are still heavily guarding the area at St Mary's Road and Goodwin Road.

Seven forensic officers were seen going into the house where the woman was beheaded five minutes ago.

The next door neighbour of the house where the attack took place, who wished not to be named, said: “I heard lots of screaming and shouting coming from next door.

“Then a guy with a knife was in our back garden. There was a lot of blood on the knife and he was just hacking away at stuff.

“It’s just unbelievable, I’m so shocked."

Lauren Perkins, who lived on Goodwin Road, said: “I was walking down the road when I saw a man with a big knife walking down the street.

“Then I saw some police come down and they told me to get off the road.

“I just can’t believe something like that would happen. It’s just so shocking.”

The Metropolitan Police's Homicide and Major Crime Command are leading the investigation. It is not being treated as a terrorist incident.

Police say it is too early to speculate on a possible motive, but they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

DCI John Sandlin, who is leading this investigation, said: "This is was a highly visible attack in broad daylight on a residential street. I can understand why this may cause people concern, however we are confident that we are not looking for anyone else at this stage.

"Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is not terrorist related.

"Local officers and specialist detectives are at the scene and will remain there for many hours to come.

"Specially trained family liaison officers will be deployed to support the family; we request that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

A 25-year-old man was detained by firearms officers close to the scene and arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody at this time.

One firearms officer was injured while the man was arrested, and is believed to have suffered a broken wrist.

The man was then tasered by other officers.

Police say they are not willing to comment on witness accounts that the victim was "beheaded", as they have not yet spoken to her next of kin. They are also not commenting on her injuries or the type of weapon or weapons that were used.

UPDATE: Met Police have confirmed they have launched a murder investigation following the death of a woman in Nightingale Road, Edmonton.

Police were initially called at 1.07pm to reports of a man armed with a knife.

Local officers and armed officers responded. On arrival, officers found a woman, no further details at this stage, collapsed in a garden area. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

London Ambulance Service confirmed that it was called to reports of a stabbing in Nightingale Road, Edmonton, at 1.30pm.

The air ambulance were also called to the scene, but doctors pronounced the woman dead at 2.07pm.
