College students who spent months in trepidation over their exam results came off an emotional rollercoaster yesterday as they found out their grades.

Pupils from Barnet and Southgate College, in Wood Street, exceeded their own expectations with top A-level results.

The college is reporting a 100 per cent pass rate in all core subjects including chemistry, English and further maths.

Caleb Kirton is originally from Texas in the US and moved to England with his family three years ago.

He achieved an A* in law, As in government and politics and English literature and an A* in his extended project politics project.

The 19-year-old is heading to Kings College to study law and eventually hopes to become a barrister.

He said: “I’ve had a great experience studying here from the US and I’m grateful to Barnet and Southgate College for helping realise my dreams, I’m looking forward to studying further in London and fulfilling my career aspirations.”

Enrico Mullings, 21, of Muswell Hill, had a challenging couple of years after dropping out of college when he did not do well in his AS levels.

After changing his focus, his hard work paid off and he leaves the college with a C in psychology, an A in sociology, a C in English language and literature and an A* in an extended project.

He is now heading to the University of Birmingham to study sociology.

Enrico said: “I’m in shock and I’m just taking it all in. It’s been a challenging few years for me, I dropped out of school and was working for a while and then just found myself at dead ends, I knew I had to do something to turn things around.

“My advice to anyone out there currently at a crossroads, is to take the initiative and work hard as it will pay off. I’m proud of my achievements but I never get a big head as you never know what’s around the corner.”

Anthea Patsalos received an A in sociology, a B in business studies and a C in psychology.

The 19-year-old, from High Barnet, is going to Kent University to study law. She said: “The teaching has been outstanding but ultimately it’s what you make of it that matters; if you work hard you’ll achieve great results.”
