A football club has been given a cash boost to help create three new teams.

Old Edmontonians Football Club, based at the Henry Barrass Stadium in Houndsfield Road, has been awarded the money from the Football Foundation's 'Grow the Game' scheme.

The £4,500 will go towards creating three new teams including under 16s and an under 18s boys teams and a girls under 10s side.

The grant has been welcomed by Edmonton MP Andy Love who said: "The grant is great news for our area.

"It's even more heart-warming to know that there are groups and individuals out there, like Old Edmontonians FC, who see where they might be able to help our community and work together to do something about it.

"Having a local football team to play in, or a boxing club to go to, is exactly the type of thing that keeps young people off the streets and prevents them from getting caught up in gang behaviour like knife crime. I really commend the work the club is doing."

Football Foundation's 'Grow the Game' aims to provide grants to clubs across the country to help create new teams and help more people gain coaching qualifications.

The scheme is paid for by the Premier League and the Football Association to increase participation in football and volunteers to help run clubs at a grassroots level.
