A pub that closed after its landlord failed to pay the bills is set to reopen.

The Hop Poles, in Baker Street, Enfield, was boarded up in early May, 2014, when its manager ran into financial troubles that resulted in the power supply being cut.

Owned by Heineken UK, the pub is now set to reopen within the next month.

Lucy Hall, spokeswoman of Star Pubs, Heineken’s pub business, told the Enfield Independent the pub has an opportunity to offer ‘serious food’ .

She said; “We are considering a refurbishment of the Hop Poles to restore it as a quality traditional pub with more of an emphasis on food.

“We are at the very early stages of planning the project and we are hoping to reopen the pub within the next four weeks with a temporary management company.

“We would like to apologise to the local community for any inconvenience the closure has caused. We are actively recruiting for a new lessee of the Hop Poles.

“This is a good pub in a good location with real potential and the opportunity to offer some serious food as it has a commercial kitchen.”

Hugh Fallon, owner of Inn on the Green, in Green Lanes, Palmers Green, is chairman of the voluntary Pubwatch group for Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill and Southgate. He has welcomed the news and is hopeful that new managers will get a fair deal.

He said: “This is excellent news as too many pubs are closing these days due to rents, drop in footfall and change of drinking habits.

“I hope that the rents offered by the owners are viable and that the new lessees will get a fair deal to ensure we keep more pubs open.”

Chase ward Councillor Nick Dines added: "It is fantastic news that the Hop Poles is going to be refurbished. It is such a landmark building in north Enfield, so seeing it boarded up has been a real shame.

"A number of people have said to me that they hope it is relaunched as a family focused pub with a restaurant, though I also guess many people who used to drink there will hope it continues to show Spurs games.

"We have also been contacted by residents who have in the past been disturbed by the noise when people leave or bands have been playing so we will be asking Heineken and the new landlords to consider their concerns."
