Two students will show off their engineering skills on the European stage.

Calum Knott, 21, of Cockfosters, along with fellow Middlesex University student John Peerless, have been called up by Squad UK for the EuroSkills 2014 which will take place in Lille, France in October.

The pair were invited to the team after excelling at the UK national skills event in Northern Ireland.

Mr Knott, a design engineering student and Mr Peerless, who studies product design, will both take part in the mechatronics category.

The pair will face stiff competition from the European elite with another team from car manufacturer Toyota entering the event in France.

The 21-year-old said: “It is an honour to have been selected as a member of Squad UK and to represent the both the UK and Middlesex University.  The competition will be tough, but I’m excited to be through.”

Ross Maloney, chief executive of Find a Future, which manages the UK’s entry into the WorldSkills Competition, said: “I offer my congratulations to every young person that has earned a place in Squad UK.”

From the competitors at EuroSkills Lille, a team will be selected to compete at the global competition ‘WorldSkills São Paulo 2015’.
