Teachers and council staff are set to strike today as part of an ongoing dispute over pay and pensions.

Enfield Borough Council says frontline services such as waste and recycling will be affected in the strike today by members of trade unions Unison, GMB, the National Union of Teachers, Unite and the Public and Commercial Services Union.

The strike comes as the unions reject the Government’s one per cent pay offer and has seen pay freezes for public sector workers in the last two years.

A statement on the Enfield Council website reads: “While the council will do everything it can to minimise disruption to residents, unfortunately it is anticipated that the strike will impact the frontline waste, recycling, street cleansing and parks services.”

The statement goes on to say that waste collection for homes and commercial waste will be made priorities along with street cleaning to town centres and fly-tipping clearances.

The strike is expected to last for 24 hours with the majority of schools expected to be closed today.
