Schools in Enfield have been recognised for being as good as gold in a sporting competition.

Fifteen schools won gold medals in the National School Games Kitemark Awards, giving Enfield the highest number of successful applications of any borough in England.

Twenty-six schools also achieved a bronze level award.

The National School Games Kitemark Award is a Government awards scheme to reward schools committed to developing competition within their school and community. Schools can win bronze, silver or gold medals.

Requirements for the gold award include having active links with sports clubs, ensuring pupils enjoy at lest two hours of PE a week, enabling at least 70 per cent of children to take part in extra curricular sporting activities each month and establishing a school sports organising committee.

Schools also need to organise a range of sporting competitions for everyone and create B, C and D teams.

Enfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people Cllr Ayfer Orhan, said: “This is a tremendous achievement and emphasizes the strong partnership working between the council and schools in the borough.

“We are committed to providing young people with the support they need to get into good habits at an early age and nurturing a love of exercise is something that will stand them in good stead in their later years.”
