After two years of fighting for the right to keep an outdoor playtime for children, an Enfield nursery has rounded off its success with a national award.

Nursery on the Green, on Chase Side, in Enfield, beat thousands of other nurseries to win the Nursery of the Year for the South 2014.

In September 2013, the nursery was staring down the barrel at the possibility of not having a garden playtime for its children following complaints from neighbours.

After receiving a unanimous yes from planners, the nursery has capped a perfect 2014 with the award.

Owner Kaye Wildman said that the last two years have been a rollercoaster and she is “overwhelmed”.

She said: “It is hard to describe what we have been through during the past two years. From expected approval to likely chance of no outside playtime to now this; it has been a rollercoaster.

“Being nominated was the icing on the cake but I think this is now the cherry on the top and I am overwhelmed at how far we have come.”

The award by the National Day Nurseries Association Awards is initially nominated by parents which results in an inspection from a nursery judge.

The play group heard the news last week and will now enter the final against other regional winners.

Mrs Wildman believes that the result has only strengthened the relationship between the parents and staff.

She said: “It says so much that the parents have nominated us and has given everyone a real boost.

“The relationship between parents and staff is even better than it was and it’s been amazing to have their support through the bad and good times.”

The group will hear next month if they are to be crowned national champions.
