A new campaign to reduce the high levels of stokes in Edmonton will take place this month.

Stroke Action’s ‘Walk and Run Against Strokes’ is aiming to lower the level of strokes in the area, which is the highest across the borough.

The event will take place between 9.30am and 11.30am in Florence Hayes Ground in Fore Street, in Edmonton on Wednesday, May 21.

According to figures by Enfield Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, the standard mortality ratio is 154 for stroke in Upper Edmonton, compared to 90 across the borough as a whole.

Edmonton MP Andy Love, who will be opening the event, said: “It is alarming to see the cold, hard facts of just how prevalent cardiovascular disease and strokes are in Edmonton, and Upper Edmonton in particular.

“One walk or run won’t change those outcomes but it might make people think twice and kick start a healthier lifestyle, which is why I’m happy to get involved.”

Rita Melifonwu, CEO of Stroke Action said: “We all need to collaborate towards reducing stroke risk in Edmonton where incidences are worse than other Enfield wards.

“The walks are designed to promote the value of physical activity in decreasing stroke risk.”
