It was full steam ahead this May Day bank holiday as people in Southgate came together for its annual fair.

Hundreds enjoyed the May Day fair, hosted by Christ Church in Southgate, The Green, with a plethora of stalls and events.

Families were able to test their balance and strength on a bucking bronco and climbing wall as well as kick back to jazz and singing at the Acorn Theatre.

Church warden Phillip Dawson said it was bigger than last year and puts the fair’s success down to a variety of reasons.

He said: “We were of course helped by the beautiful weather, but also the sheer number of different activities taking place throughout the day.

“We had more people for sure, whereas people last year came in dribs and drabs, we had a steady flow this year of people taking part in everything.”

The annual event also celebrated its age old tradition of May Queen in which one name is picked at random from members of the church to be queen.

That position fell to ten-year-old Ellie Tobin of Bounds Green, who led the precession through the fair alongside the town crier.

Her mother Sarah said: “She was so excited to be the head of the precession this time around. The whole day was fantastic and gave the community a chance to come together and have some fun.”

The church is believed to have raised approximately £4,000 for this year’s charity, The Royal British Legion, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Other money raised will go to the sixth scout group, Air Training Corps Squadron, and the Hatters Explorer Scouts who all helped run the barbecue and climbing wall.

Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes, who opened the event said: “There was all the fun of the fair on Southgate’s Green. Such was the crowd that my stall sold out of bacon butties after three hours.

“It was an excellent day for an excellent cause of the Royal British Legion.”
