A schoolgirl that was due to be deported in the next hour has been given a reprieve but her future is still uncertain.

Yashika Bageerathi, 19 of Fox Lane in Palmers Green informed her teachers at Oasis Academy in South Street, Ponders End that she would not be deported to Mauritius today and will be heading back to Yarls Wood detention centre.

Her future still remains unclear as no terms or conditions have been agreed on how long she will remain at the detention centre.

An online petition, started by fellow pupils who were incensed by the news last week that Yashika had been detained, has currently has 25,119 signatures.

Twitter has also erupted with comments, imploring for her not to be deported to Mauritius where her mother and two younger siblings fled from in 2011 fearing their safety.

She was detained last week and scheduled to fly back to her homeland at 1.50pm today.

Deputy Principal, Zoe Thompson said: “We are absolutely elated with this news but we are continuing to campaign as hard as possible to keep her in the country and allow her to finish her exams.

“She was able to call me and tell me that she will not be boarding the flight and will be heading back to Yarl’s Wood. We have no idea where this came from but we are hoping to find out more as the day goes on.”

Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes, who has made a representation to immigration minister has said that British Airways refused to take Yashika onto the plane.

He tweeted that the minister still has to consider his representation meaning the decision has been delayed.
