A group of mental health patients were all smiles during a day of activities to raise money for Sport Relief.

Patients at the North London Clinic in Edmonton won a match against staff, with the match raising a total of £2,600.

Occupational therapy assistant and sports instructor Connor Hickey said: "This is a great morale booster for staff and patients, as well as for the patient to patient relationship."

Just over a month ago, Mr Hickey and fellow occupational therapy assistant Billy Dix started co-ordinating plans to hold events to support Sport Relief, as part of the wider efforts by Partnerships in Care, the leading independent mental health and learning disability provider in the UK.

Mr Hickey said it was the patients who were integral to the organisation of a 14-mile run within the courtyard of the male-only clinic as a means to raise money.

The day's activities commenced with the making of smoothies, the favoured concoction being the plum and apple, followed by the football match between patients and staff that resulted in a 5-4 win by the patients on penalties.

Unit manager Gary Stobbs highlighted the fact that the provision of service to 49 patients typically incorporates an element of exercise.

He said: "Physical health has become more prominent in mental health. We regularly hold wellbeing clinics so this was a great opportunity to link to that."
