Gardeners from Capel Manor College in Enfield are going for gold in the Young Gardener of the Year competition

Garden design students Vanessa Blain and Lucy Conochie and nine horticulture students from Capel Manor College in Enfield have collaborated on a design for the contest.

Vanessa, 43, and Lucy, 31, were challenged to design a garden that meets the brief set by Channel 5 celebrity gardener David Domoney, which stipulates entries must be sustainable and inspire inner-city London residents.

Their design, called Cultivated Calm, has addressed common problems with inner-city gardens, such as lack of privacy, boxy shapes and sometimes unpleasant smells. The Level 3 Garden Design students said: “Space and time is a limited for people living in the city so we really had to take this into consideration with our design.

“The plants we selected are mostly evergreens so not only do they look good all year round, they are generally easy to look after reducing the time spent maintaining the garden.

“We’ve also used storm-water channels in the design which means the garden is able to distribute water where it needs it, again keeping it low-maintenance.”

Over the past few weeks, the team of nine horticulture students from the college – Tom Coltman-West, David Ure, George Ioannou, Gareth Lumb, Jyoti Gudka, Samantha Jackson, Jessica Mayard, Gideon Taylor and Andrew Arch – has brought Vanessa and Lucy’s design to life.

Staff members involved in overseeing the project were Sarah Seery, Dom Grech, Sarah Neophytou, Terry Laverick and John Gilbert.

Now completed, it will soon be transported in its entirety to Earl’s Court, where it will be exhibited for the full duration of the Ideal Homes Show 2014, which takes place between March 14 to 30.

If successful, their entry could earn Capel Manor, based in Bullsmore Lane, its third consecutive gold prize in as many years.

The competition is organised by Mr Domoney, in association with the Prince Foundation, as a way of boosting the careers of those who are new to the industry.
