A rough sleeper who brutally beat a fellow homeless man to death has been found guilty of murder.

Damin Walczyk, 30, of no fixed address, was convicted at the Old Bailey today of murdering Alfred Stemporowski, 56.

Mr Stemprorwski's body was found in a brick refuse building in Keats Close, Enfield, on Thursday, May 30, 2013, by police officers who were called to deal with a disturbance.

A post mortem found that the victim, who was living with Walczyk at the building along with a married couple, died of major chest injuries and fractures to his rib cage.

The court heard on Wednesday, May 29, he was asleep on a mattress when, without warning, Walczyk, who had been drinking, grabbed him and repeatedly punched him in the face and upper body.

When the couple tried to escape, he blocked their path. Then when he was asked why he attacked Mr Stemporowski, Walczyk replied: "For the love of my country," which is a Polish phrase that means doing something for no reason at all.

Scared, the married couple managed to escape and tried to alert members of the public. However, due to the language barrier, neither the police or ambulance service were called.

Later that day, the pair returned to the building to find Walczyk asleep and the victim on the mattress. Assuming he was asleep, they left him alone.

At 6am the following morning, they realised he was dead.

Detective Chief Inspector Sheila Stewart, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Damin Walczyk launched a totally unprovoked attack on Alfred Stemporowski.

"The level of violence he used was terrifying and he used this to intimidate the witnesses present. He used his muscular build and propensity for violence to assault and intimidate the persons he lived with and ultimately murder an innocent man."

Walcyzk will be sentenced on March 31.
