North Middlesex University Hospital has launched a mascot to celebrate the opening of its new maternity unit.

The hospital, in Sterling Way, Edmonton, opened its new maternity ward in November, 2013.

After appealing for help choosing a mascot, ‘Midsy’ the bear was chosen after gaining the most votes from local schools.

Every baby born in the hospital will receive their own ‘Midsy’ bear as will special guests.

Princess Anne will also receive her very own bear when she visits the hospital on Thursday, February 27.

Fiona Laird, head of midwifery at the hospital, said: "The new maternity unit is among the best in the UK. It’s a fantastic place for mums and their partners to have their babies.

“Midsy is a gift from us to them to remind them of the very special occasion.

"We expect to have about 5,500 births this year - so there will be a lot of 'Midsy' bears about in 2014."
