Tottenham Hotspur football club are planning to build a 500-seater stand at their training ground to the dismay of nearby residents.

Spurs players train every day at the multi-million pound facility in Whitewebbs Lane, Bulls Cross and the Premier League club hopes to raise new floodlighting as well as the 500-seater stand.

The site, which sits on green belt land, has prompted concerns among people living nearby.

Joseph Davy of Hawthorn Grove, to the south of the training ground, is concerned for the amount of traffic this could cause.

He said: “This is ridiculous; the club is trying to fit 500 more people onto an area which is already congested. This will only result in more problems and those roads cannot cope.”

Alex Motolla, 69, of Goat Lane, Enfield, said: “This is just another piece they are adding to their growing takeover of the area. I am all for promoting sport in the area but why would a football club’s training ground need to pack in half a thousand people.

“They aren’t going to be playing their fixtures there are they?”

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman said that the club is sensitive to the surrounding environment and the stand will not increase traffic.

He said: “The club is committed to providing a training centre that is sensitive to its surrounding environment and extremely sustainable.

"The proposed academy stand has been designed extremely sensitively and will only cater for existing academy spectator numbers and therefore will not increase traffic movements along Whitewebbs Lane. The re-siting of the consented floodlights has been located to minimise impact on the green belt and the conservation area."

The plans are due to be decided by Enfield Borough Council's planning committee on Tuesday, February 25.
