Green thinking has won Enfield Borough Council a nomination in local government awards.

The council has been nominated in the energy efficiency category for the Local Government Chronicle Public Service Awards 2014.

In the past two years, the council has secured up to £10 million funding from British Gas; invested £6.5 million to improve the energy performance of council buildings, schools and street lights.

Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment, said: “Enfield Council is leading the way in energy efficiency with an estimated £500 million being invested through the ambitious Enfield 2020 Sustainability Programme.

“We are continually seeing reductions in budgets and it is therefore vital that councils do everything they can to do things in different and more effective ways so that the vital services residents expect and rely on can be protected and improved.”

The awards will take place at Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane on March 12, 2014.
