Enfield Borough Council has been awarded £600,000 for new cycling projects in the borough.
The money has been provided from the Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s 'vision for cycling' plan but is separate from the ‘mini-Holland’ cycling scheme bid.
The council will use the money to deliver more free cycling training to schools and residents and install new cycle stands across the borough.
So far, 400 adults and 1,000 school children have taken advantage of free cycling training this year.
Councillor Chris Bond is hopeful that this money will be the start of more cycle funding in the borough
He said: “We’re thrilled at this announcement, as these projects will make it easier and safer for residents to cycle. Cycling is high on our agenda because it helps to cut congestion and it’s a great form of exercise which promotes a healthy lifestyle.
“We hope this is the shape of things to come and it’s a good omen ahead of receiving the results of the larger Mini-Holland bid for a share of £100 million for a network of new cycle routes.
"We’ve got big plans for cycling in Enfield and its an exciting time to be a cyclist in this borough.”
